Using Snapshots (Version Control)
Where to Find This
Services → Website Editor tab
Snapshots are saved versions of your pages that you can restore at any time. Think of them as undo points—you can try new designs safely, knowing you can always go back.
What Are Snapshots?
A snapshot is a complete copy of your page at a specific moment:
- All components and their settings
- Layout and styling
- Text content and images
- Everything needed to restore that exact version
Snapshots are stored separately from your live page, so experimenting won't affect your published site.
Why Use Snapshots?
Before Major Changes
Create a snapshot before:
- Redesigning a page layout
- Trying new color schemes or styles
- Adding or removing major sections
- Testing different component arrangements
If you don't like the changes, restore the snapshot.
Version History
Keep track of your page evolution:
- Compare different design iterations
- See what your page looked like last week or last month
- Recover content if you accidentally delete something
Collaborative Safety
When multiple people work on the same site:
- Save a snapshot before making changes
- If someone else's edits conflict, restore your version
- Document design decisions with labeled snapshots
Types of Snapshots
Auto-Snapshots
The system automatically creates snapshots:
- When you save: Every save creates an auto-snapshot (limited retention)
- Periodic: Snapshots at regular intervals while editing
Auto-snapshots are eventually deleted to save storage, keeping your account within limits.
Manual Snapshots
You create these yourself:
- Named: Give them descriptive names ("Homepage - Before Holiday Design")
- Permanent: Kept until you delete them (counts toward your storage limit)
- Important milestones: Use for versions you definitely want to keep
Creating Snapshots
Automatic Creation
Auto-snapshots happen without any action from you:
- Every time you click Save in the editor
- You don't need to do anything
Creating Manual Snapshots
To create a named snapshot:
- Open the page in the Website Editor
- Click the clock icon (Snapshots) in the header toolbar
- Click Create Snapshot
- Enter a descriptive name (e.g., "Before Holiday Redesign" or "V2 - Green Theme")
- Click Save
The snapshot appears in your list immediately.
Use clear, descriptive names like "Homepage - October 2025" or "Working Version - Before Client Review" so you can easily find them later.
Viewing Snapshots
Opening the Snapshots Menu
- Open the page in the Website Editor
- Click the clock icon in the header
- A dropdown shows all snapshots for this page
Snapshot Information
Each snapshot shows:
- Name (or "Auto-save" for automatic snapshots)
- Date and time created
- Age (e.g., "2 hours ago" or "3 days ago")
- Type (manual or auto)
Snapshots are listed newest first.
Restoring Snapshots
How to Restore
To go back to a previous version:
- Open the Snapshots menu
- Find the snapshot you want
- Click Restore next to it
- Confirm the restoration
The page reloads with that snapshot's content. You're now editing the restored version.
Restoring a snapshot replaces your current page state. If you want to keep the current version, create a manual snapshot before restoring.
After Restoring
- The editor reloads with the snapshot content
- Your current (pre-restore) state is saved as a new auto-snapshot
- You can continue editing from the restored point
- Save to make the restoration permanent
Undoing a Restore
If you restore the wrong snapshot:
- Open the Snapshots menu again
- Look for the most recent auto-snapshot (created during the restore)
- Restore that snapshot to get back to where you were
Deleting Snapshots
Manual snapshots count toward your storage limit. Delete old ones you no longer need.
How to Delete
- Open the Snapshots menu
- Find the snapshot to delete
- Click the trash icon
- Confirm deletion
Auto-snapshots are automatically deleted after a retention period (varies by plan). You don't need to manually clean them up.
What Gets Deleted
Only the selected snapshot is removed:
- The current page is not affected
- Other snapshots remain intact
- Deletion is permanent (no undo)
Snapshot Storage Limits
Snapshots consume storage space:
Auto-snapshots: Automatically deleted after the retention period.
Manual snapshots: Kept until you delete them or reach your plan's limit.
Managing Storage
If you hit your snapshot limit:
- Delete old manual snapshots you no longer need
- Upgrade to a higher plan for more storage
- Rely on auto-snapshots for short-term history
Best Practices
Before Major Edits
Always create a manual snapshot before:
- Redesigning layouts
- Changing themes or color schemes
- Removing large sections
- Making client-requested changes
Meaningful Names
Use descriptive names:
- Good: "Homepage - Black Friday Promotion"
- Good: "Services Page - Working Version Nov 2025"
- Bad: "Backup 1"
- Bad: "Test"
Regular Cleanup
Review manual snapshots monthly:
- Delete old versions you no longer need
- Keep only important milestone snapshots
- Free up storage for new snapshots
Restoration Strategy
Before restoring an old snapshot:
- Create a manual snapshot of the current version (in case you want it back)
- Restore the old snapshot
- Review and decide if you want to keep it
- If yes, save. If no, restore your manual snapshot from step 1.
Common Scenarios
Scenario 1: Accidental Deletion
Problem: You accidentally deleted a section with important content.
Solution:
- Don't save the page
- Open Snapshots
- Restore the most recent auto-snapshot (from before the deletion)
- The deleted content is back
Scenario 2: Client Doesn't Like Changes
Problem: You redesigned a page, but the client wants the old version.
Solution:
- Open Snapshots
- Find the snapshot from before the redesign
- Restore it
- The page reverts to the old design
Scenario 3: Comparing Two Designs
Problem: You want to A/B test two different homepage layouts.
Solution:
- Create a manual snapshot of Design A ("Homepage - Version A")
- Edit the page to create Design B
- Save Design B and create a snapshot ("Homepage - Version B")
- Restore Version A to show stakeholders
- Restore Version B to show the alternative
- Choose one and continue editing from there
Scenario 4: Recovering Old Content
Problem: You changed a page months ago and need the old text back.
Solution:
- Open Snapshots
- Look for an old snapshot from that time period
- Restore it temporarily
- Copy the old text
- Restore the current version
- Paste the old text where needed
Snapshots vs. Manual Backups
Snapshots are built into the editor for convenience. For critical long-term backups, consider exporting content manually.
Troubleshooting
Snapshot List is Empty
Possible causes:
- No snapshots created yet (new page)
- Retention period expired (auto-snapshots deleted)
- Wrong page selected
Solution: Create a manual snapshot now for future use.
Can't Restore Snapshot
Possible causes:
- Browser cache issue
- Page load error
Solution:
- Refresh your browser
- Reopen the editor
- Try restoring again
- Contact support if the issue persists
Snapshot Shows Wrong Content
Possible cause: Restored an outdated snapshot by mistake.
Solution: Restore a more recent snapshot or the latest auto-snapshot.
